Dear Sir
Altho The market for illustrated books is still said to be deplorable, a privately printed edition illustrated by myself recently sold out within a month of publication and made a very handsome sum for the sponsors. This may of course have been a chance hit in the dark, but I am inclined to regard it as a sign that money can still be made by well produced and well designed books, provided that the right book can be found for the right artist. I believe you have yourself published illustrated books in the past and if you have any intention of again doing so, I should be very pleased to meet you and exchange ideas. it is possible that you do not know my work. so by way of credentials, I may mention my edition of Voltaire’s Candide Routledge 1922 and the Mimiambs of Herondas, Fanfrolico Press 1931.
A draft of a letter to an unknown publisher. Obviously post 1936 as he mentions 1601, so it may be the initial letter to the Fortune Press (see Life & Work page 27).
